Where to seal Canexel
On wood-fibre siding, water goes for the cuts. Those are what we protect.
- Junctions with windows and doors.

- Board end cuts where the fibre is exposed.
What we don't seal
We never seal the horizontal lap at the bottom of each board. That gap lets the wall breathe and drain. Plugging it traps moisture behind the siding, which is exactly what we want to avoid.
Colour-matched joints
A white bead on grey or brown Canexel stands out from the street. We pick the sealant colour to match your siding so the joint blends in.
Why end cuts are so vulnerable
At the factory, Canexel boards are sealed and painted on their faces. When a board is cut on site to fit a window or corner, the wood fibre is exposed. That's where water gets in first.
A protected cut and a continuous joint with the trim keep water away from the fibre. An open joint, even a narrow one, lets the board end soak up water every time it rains.
Vinyl, aluminum and fibre cement
Same principle: seal the junctions with openings, not the joints designed to move or drain. Vinyl, for instance, has to slide in its trims as temperatures change. Sealing it in the wrong spot makes it ripple.
What it costs
As a guide, expect $30 to $60 per standard window and $3 to $8 per linear foot for special joints. The final price depends on the inspection: actual joint length, condition of the old sealant, access and height. The quote is free and you get it within 24 hours.
