Winter caulking
Yes, exterior caulking can be done in winter. The silicone sealant we use applies down to −30 °C, so there's no end-of-season cutoff.
What matters isn't the thermometer, it's a dry surface with no frost or ice. We take care of that.

We remove snow and ice around and inside the joint.

Full removal of the old sealant, then surfaces are wiped and dried.

DOWSIL CWS on a dry surface, tooled just like in summer.
The conditions that actually matter
Cold isn't the problem. Moisture is.
- Dry surfaces, no frost.
- No ice or snow in the joint.
- We clear and wipe before sealing.
- We postpone for freezing rain or wet surfaces.
Why not wait for spring
Putting it off costs more than getting it done. A joint that's open in November is wider by March, and wall damage often only shows once it reaches the inside.
- Drafts and heating bills are happening now.
- Water in an open joint freezes, expands and widens the crack.
Why cold weather works well
In the cold, materials contract and the joint is at its widest. Sealing then fills the joint in its most demanding position. When materials expand again in spring, the sealant gets compressed instead of stretched.
What we check on the day
In the morning, we check the day's forecast: no freezing rain, no wet snow during application. On site, we check each joint before sealing it. A sunny frame dries fast; a shaded corner on a north wall can hold frost longer. We start with the ready walls and come back to the others once they're dry.
If conditions don't allow clean work, we call you to reschedule. We'd rather move a day than seal over a damp surface.
What it costs
As a guide, expect $30 to $60 per standard window and $3 to $8 per linear foot for special joints. The final price depends on the inspection: actual joint length, condition of the old sealant, access and height. The quote is free and you get it within 24 hours.

Do windows need to be opened during the work?
No. Caulking is done from outside with windows closed.
